Coming Dawn

The Emperor’s Palace thundered out of hyper space into orbit over Mars. Small rocks bounced off of the hull of the huge ship, attracted by the gravity well it was causing. Small grit particles bounced off of the bridge’s vast window, deflected by a combination of transparent alluvium and energy fields. Legan cringed every time that happened, always worried that the fifty foot windows would break one of these times. He adjusted his collar, still stiff with starch. He’d only been wearing it for eight hours now, and he still felt out of place. The other bridge officers, most of whom where now his subordinates when they had been his superiors, where scowling at him. ‘Why did he have to choose me? I’m not special!’

The young feline sitting at the comm.’s desk next to him turned around. “Sir, we have real-time communications with 3028’s local aid!” She paused for a moment, waiting for him to say something. Finally she gave up. “I’ll just punch it up then shall I sir?”

Legan realised that she was talking to him. “Oh, yes, thank you lieutenant.”

The vid-screen wavered for a moment, then an anxious human face appeared. “Hello, is this thing on?” said the human. “This is Jason Franks, reporting for Elman Span. He’s not available at the moment…” There was a sound of rushing water in the background.

Legan picked up a head set. “Mr Franks, my name is Commander Legan Marcon. We’ve reviewed the results that where sent to the fleet. The results are good and bad. On the good side, it looks like your planet is what we’re looking for. On the bad side, it looks like,” he looked at his pad, “The spawn on your world seem to have split into two genders, from the samples you sent us…”

“Wait, did you say SAMPLES? I only transmitted one set of results.” Jason scratched his head. “Where would you have gotten two sets of results? And separate genders? I know that the Spawn share a lot of DNA with human’s, but…” He slapped his head and swore. “I know what those are the results from. OH MAN, this is bad.” Jason’s head disappeared from the screen, and the communication cut off.

Legan looked at the lieutenant. “Mayna, if these guy’s ever join the empire, remind me to warn them about their use of language…”

----------------------
Gordon sidled up next to Sally, as she removed her lunch from the cafeteria fridge. “You OK?” he asked.

Sally rolled her eyes. “Look Gordon, I wasn’t scared. I was merely surprised, OK? There was nothing ‘super natural’ in that house, that guy even said as much! I was just putting on an act for you.”

Gordon snorted. “Oh yes, how often do people go ‘Oh my yes, this building is plagued by the souls of the damned! Run as fast as you can’? Never, that’s how often!”

Sally sat down at the small table, and opened her sandwidge. “Listen, life is not an episode of ‘Scooby Doo’, ok? There are no haunted mansions, no creepy caretakers, no haunted fairgrounds, and no ghostly conspiracies. Life is life, nothing more.”

A voice from the doorway said “I wish that where true.” Gordon and Sally span around, to find the man from the previous night standing at the door.

“What are you doing here?” asked both Gordon and Sally at the same time. The man walked into the room, grabbed Gordon’s arm, and pulled up his sleeve up. On Gordon’s wrist was a small ring of circles, getting larger as they went around.

“HEY, what are you DOING?” exclaimed Gordon. Sally knelt down, looking closely at the symbol.

“Hey, I have the same birthmark on my…” She looked up. “Never mind. What IS that?”

Jason’s face fell. “This is bad. Look, I didn’t tell you two the truth. I think it’s something you should see for yourself…”

----------------------
Elman stepped onto the bridge of the Emperor’s Palace. Halarnis looked at the wolf as he stepped up to the base of the throne. He swallowed nervously. He’d only seen the emperor once before in person, at his initial briefing. Halarnis’ eyes rested on the wolf for a moment. “So, I understand that your local aid has had to do your job, and when you did do your job, you did it wrong.”

‘CRAP, what did I do?’ Thought Elman, but he said “My lord? Forgive my stupidity, what do you mean?”

Halarnis stood up. “You sent the wrong samples to the fleet. Instead of the samples of the specimen which I understand was collected by your aid, AGAINST my direct orders, you sent the samples of two of the members of the local population. HOW you managed to mistake the hair of a human for skin of a spawn is beyond me, but I can tell you, I hope that no-one else has made the same mistake as you!” Through his entire monologue, Halarnis hadn’t even slightly raised his voice, but every single person on the bridge was looking directly at them.

The wolf was rooted to the spot in fear. “I will, however, give you one chance to redeem yourself.” He smiled, and Elman stepped back. “YOU can be part of my away team!”…

---------------
Jason led the way back into the heart of Westerfeild house, and stopped outside the make-shift lab. He turned to face the two young people, and noted their apprehension. Gordon was definitely terrified, and looked like he wanted to run, while Sally looked likely to break down in tears. It was worse than he thought; they were reacting to its presence already.

“Ok, I just want you to know, there is no risk of any harm, what-so-ever.” The pair nodded apprehensively. He led them around the corner. There, on the table, was the creature that they had seen the previous night. It bucked against its restraints. The pair stopped.

“Pile of manikin limbs, eh?” Said Gordon to Jason. He turned to Sally. “We have to get out of here NOW!” he said to her, but she had the same look on her face as she’d had last night. It wasn’t a look of fear, it was one of concern.

“The poor thing, its hurt…” She started. She took a step towards the table.

Jason grabbed hold of her. “OH NO YOU DON’T! That’s just mixed messages you’re getting.”

He turned to Gordon. “That mark on your arm, it’s an old bio-hazard symbol. The same as on that thing. Sorry mate, the two of you are related. Same with her. Your both picking up signals. You’re both getting an ‘injured and trapped’ message. Though her maternal instincts are telling her to take care for it.” He leaned over to Sally, and said something in her ear. She blinked, and suddenly seemed to be focusing on the real world again.

“What the hell just happened?” she asked. She took a step away from the table. “What the hell is that thing?” She asked, pointing at the table.

Jason rubbed his throat. “My master’s call them the Spawn. They’re kinda like a cross between a locust and a rat. They spread from planet to planet on ships. They start out about six inches long, and grow into these things. They reproduce really fast, and kill ALL terrestrial life. Anything that can swim is safe, but everything else is doomed.” He started walking towards another room, the other two following in his trail. “My masters have been trying to keep their numbers down. They’ve been at it for millions of years, and they’re just starting to get the upper hand…”

He suddenly stopped in the centre of the room. Sally and Gordon noticed that the room had a strange array of small crystals embedded in the walls. “What’s up with this?” asked Gordon.

“Oh, this? Just a simple teleported homer.” Said Jason, pushing a selection of crystals on the wall.

“It’s a wh…” started Sally, but her word’s where cut off, as all three humans suddenly disappeared…

----------------------
Mayana wandered through one of the huge halls of the command tower. There where staterooms, banqueting halls, galleries, hospitals, and even the occasional busker up here. The command tower was less a control centre, more a small city, with all of the amenities that could be needed to live comfortably. She had heard that some people who had been born in the tower had never visited another part of the ship. There was no need.

She stopped at a large map which was pinned to a wall with magnetic bolts. It showed, in good detail, the level that she was on. She ran a claw over the map, and tapped gently on the transporter room. Why she had been sent to welcome their visitors was beyond her. And who where these “visitors”? Her mind wandered through its own little world.

Could they be dignitaries from one of the member worlds? Could it be a member of the upper class, one of those who were able to draw their ancestor to the emperor himself?

She shuddered. No-one could stand the upper classes. They where arrogant, in-bred morons. Not even the emperor himself could stand them. She sighed. No matter who it was, they wouldn’t be that interested in her.

She arrived at the transporter room, her mind still wandering. Legan seemed to like her. She didn’t quite know how she felt about him. He was nice, but now he was a full officer, he’d get a big head like all of the other commanders. The fact that he was the emperor’s ex-o would probably help to inflame his ego.

She opened the door to the transporter room as she came back to the real world. There was a creature just inside, which span around and emitted a blood curdling scream…

--------------------
“…at?” finished sally, as the small group of humans materialised in an ornate, hi domed chamber. Gordon and Sally both looked around, while Jason started feeling around against one walls.

Gordon looked up at the ceiling. He squinted at the artwork. “It looks like the Sistine Chapel in here!” said Sally.

“Yeah, meet’s Sonic the Hedgehog! These people have a REALLY strong animal fixation…” He ran a hand down one of the walls. The same crystal’s where present in the wall here as in the house they had just left, but in a much larger lattice.

Jason was still poking and prodding another wall. “Yeah, well, our species has a people fixation for exactly the same reason. Where the heck is that door button?”

There was a click behind Sally, and she turned around. Before her was a human sized cat with grey and white striped fur, and thigh length hair. She screamed! The cat screamed back.

“WHY ARE YOU SCREAMING?” Screamed Sally.

“BECAUSE YOU ARE!” Said the large cat. Jason put a hand on the shoulders of the two women.

“I think that you can both stop screaming.” He said two both of them. He turned to the feline. “I think we’ve spoken. I’m Jason Franks. We talked over the video system? You where the communication officer?”

The feline’s breathing returned to normal. “Oh, yes, I remember now.” She straightened her uniform. “My name is Lieutenant Mayana Howen. Commander Marcon sent me to collect you. I’m to take the three of you to the bridge.”

Jason stepped back. “Then do lead the way.”

Mayana smiled lightly, and turned away. Gordon leaned over to Jason. “THESE are the people you work for?” Jason nodded “But, they’re, well, animals!”

Jason turned around to face Gordon. “Their civilisation was space faring while we where trying to get the hang of fire. I think WE may be the animals.”

Gordon swallowed nervously. “Just as long as they don’t try any of that abduction nonsense.” The four people stepped into an ornate lift, and the door’s closed behind them…

----------------------
“Ah, General! How good of you to join us.” Said Halarnis, as Falcen stepped into his personal quarters. He poured a drink and turned to face the badger. “I think we’re missing a few people for our little get together. But, we can start our talks now.”

Falcen’s jaw dropped. Halarnis was wearing a suit of ornate powered armour, mostly iron, but with areas of raised and etched gold. After a few false starts, he managed to get out a few words. “That’s the original armour! The very first suit of armour!”

Halarnis smiled. “Yes, I thought it was about time I brought it out of storage. I think it still fits…” He pulled at the chest plate a bit, moving it into a more comfortable position.

He looked around the room. Sitting on a large sofa against on wall was Elman Span, fidgeting nervously. Legan Marcon was looking at a series of tapestries hung against one wall. Then there was Falcen and his entourage. Some marines in full armour, and a few in only carapace armour. Vitus Sarn was standing on his own, studying the other people in the room.

“Gentle men!” he turned to three of the marines who were female. “AND ladies… I want you to be the first to know who will be part of the mission to the capital!” There was a general muttering of agreement. “Well, YOU lot are!”

The room went dead. Everyone was totally still, except for Halarnis, who took a sip from his drink, and smiled at the small crowd. “I thought you’d be pleased…”

----------------------
The lift doors opened out into a corridor that looked like it wouldn’t be out of place in the Buckingham Palace. The small party of people stepped into the corridor, the three humans looking around in awe, while Mayana lead the way down the corridor to a vast pair of doors. The sound of raised voices can be heard from the other side. The large feline pushes the doors open, and the group are shown a very weird scene;

The large wolf that was Elman Span was having a panic attack, breathing heavily into a paper bag, Legan Marcon patting him on the back trying to calm him down. Some of the large armoured marines where arguing amongst themselves, while the carapace armoured kangaroo Vitus was complaining at his commander, Falcen.

Mayana stepped up to Halarnis, and cleared her throat. He looked down at the smaller feline, and she whispered into his ear. Jason darted across the room to his master to comfort him, while the other two humans stood shocked in the doorway. “I feel like I’m at some kind of really weird convention…” said Sally, and Gordon nodded.

“Ok, we’re all here, so let’s continue!” Said Halarnis, placing his drink on a table besides him. “We are all going to be going to the capital. Every one of us, so don’t argue.” He turned to the Gordon and Sally, who where still standing in the doorway. “Ah, you must be the two with the special connection to the Swarm that I have heard so much about. Welcome to our little party. I am Emperor Halarnis, but you can call me your highness.” He turned back to the rest of the people. “Let us prepare to depart!”

Halarnis walked out of the room, followed by the marines, leaving just Elman, Mayana, Legan, Vitus, Jason, Gordon and Sally, standing around in shock. “He can’t be serious! Is HE coming with us?” Said Vitus to no-one in particular. The others looked at one another.

Gordon and Sally turned to Jason. “What the hell have you gotten us into?”…

In the depths of the Atlantic, something stirred. Within the bowels of an ancient city, sitting on the ocean floor, a series of chambers opened, revealing the slumbering forms of 20 heavily armoured figures. Slowly, they began to awaken, opening their eyes to see the figure of the vixen standing before them.

“Welcome back to the world of the living my children.” She said. “I hope you are all feeling ok.”

The figures moved out of their chambers and knelt before the vixen. “Good.” She said. “Now, we’re going to have some visitors soon, and I want them to feel welcome.

“So give them a welcome that they’ll never forget…”
