Darkness

“Come on!” said Sally, pulling on Gordon’s arm. “I want to see the famous Westerfeild house sunset!”

Gordon struggled to get free. “Do you know why it’s famous? Because the house is haunted, and has been since old Lady Westerfeild died six years ago. Nobody in his or her right mind goes to that house, or even within two miles of the place. The last person who did is in a mental hospital off toward Soak somewhere, continually talking about the best grooming methods for champion race horses!”

Sally stopped pulling for a moment to consider this. “Why grooming methods for horses? Why not something more traditional, like ‘those eyes, those hideous, grotesque eyes!!!’” she said in a mockingly insane voice.

“How the hell should I know, the man’s insane, remember!” said Gordon. He looked toward the western horizon, and grimaced at how low the sun was in the sky. He liked Sally, even though she had only lived in the town for eight months, having recently got a job as the manager of the local branch of Tesco. She also seemed to like him, even though he was the most annoying man in town. “Look Sally, if you want to tempt fate, we can go back to town and buy some expired food from the Chinese take-away, but please don’t make me go up there” he said, pointing to the huge house on the hillside. “I have no intention of dying or going insane, just so that I can get a good view of the sunset! No way on earth or in heaven and hell!”

She put her hands on her hips, and glared at him. “But if you’re with me,” she said in a voice like thin silk, “nothing will attack me, as you’re such a gallant young man.”

Gordon sighed, and shook his head. “Alright, I’ll come with you and look after you!” He said reluctantly, and she smiled, grabbed his arm and resumed pulling him up the hill, before he could remember that he had taken her to a judo class only the day before, and that she had a black belt.
----------------------

Soon, Darkness fell. The kind of Darkness that not only needs to have a capital letter, but the italic writing to make it really scary.

The house was empty, completely void of spirit or ghost, and held no deadly mystery.

That is, of course, if you exclude the creature strapped to a table, and the man looking at the two young people moving toward the house up the hill. He sighed, shook his head and went back to his work…
----------------------

Gordon sat with his head resting on his knuckles as the sun slowly set behind the hills, giving the sky a beautiful pink tinge. Sally let out a sigh, and then grabbed Gordon’s arm.

“Lets go and look in the house!” she whispered hurriedly.

Gordon thought for a moment. The house was boarded up, so the only way to see in would be to enter the house, and since it was locked after that man went insane, and Sally was no housebreaker, then they where safe. “Ok,” he said, “we’ll have a look at the house, then we go back to town, got it?”

“Got it.” she said, and ran of, pulling the smug Gordon behind, like an over confident barge.

They soon reached the house, and Gordon smiled to himself, as Sally went try the doorknob. The building is locked, he thought, so she can’t get in and force me to come along as well.

The door, despite all of Gordon’s hopes, was unlocked. Sally pushed it open, and walked a short way in to the house. She turned to face Gordon, who had gone through several shades of grey, and was approaching a pure white color very quickly.

“Come on, you big baby. There is nothing in this house, or any other house in the country which could be that scary.”
----------------------

This statement is, in every sense of the word, completely false. In this house was a creature so hideous and vile, that you couldn’t bump in to it in a dark alley.

This is due to the fact that it would paralyze you with disgust before you where even five feet away from it, even in the Dark…
----------------------

Walking down the corridors of the long abandoned house, Gordon felt somewhat more secure, and had returned to his normal skin color. The halls were empty, and there was no sound except his footsteps and those of Sally’s beside him. In vain, Gordon flicked the light switch a few times, and was gifted with the exact same amount of light that was already there.

“Its really Dark in here. Did you bring a torch with you?” said Gordon, already knowing that the answer would be yes.

Sally, much to Gordon’s lack of surprise, pulled out a pocket torch, turned to him and stared. “Did you just say dark with a capital and italics? It’s not that scary in here.”

They continued down the corridor, and turned a corner. As they rounded the turning, they saw something that chilled their bones. Lying on a table in the center of the room was a hideous thing with at least four arms. Gordon, who was expecting to see something like this, found the willpower to react like a true man…

He grabbed Sally by the arm and ran like hell down the corridor.
----------------------

A figure stepped out of the shadows in the dining room, and watched the two people flee.

That was the last thing he had wanted, for people to know what was going on in the house. But, now it was too late. He realized that he should have locked the door…
----------------------

Gordon leaned against the wall of the corridor as he fought for breath. Sally was also gasping and was bent double with the strain of running.

“What was that thing?” said Sally in between each wheezing breath.

Gordon shrugged. “I think it may be the reason that there is a man in Soak going on about how a balanced diet is important in getting a thick, glossy mane. I know that looking at that would send me mad after a few...”

--Creak--

Both people held their breath. The sound of a door opening in this house was one of the single scariest noises ever, especially when accompanied by footsteps.

Like this one was.

Both Sally and Gordon started to shiver, as the footsteps got gradually closer and closer. Soon they where just around the corner. It was at this point that Sally screamed. The footsteps rounded the corner at a rush, and a man wearing a dark cloak rushed towards them.

“What’s going on? Who are you people?” asked the man. Sally slowly stopped screaming.

The cloaked man looked at the two young and very scared people in front of him. “Well? Who are you? The house is currently closed to the public, due to construction work.”

The two glanced at each other, both with bemused expressions on their faces.

“We thought the place was haunted.” said Sally, looking shocked now.

“It will be in a few months.” said the man; “They’re turning this place into a museum, complete with ghost. Well, a few ghost sound effects.”

“But that thing in the dining hall. What is that meant to be?” said Gordon.

“Those are just dismantled dummies, like the ones in shop windows. Look scary, don’t they, when the limbs are all jumbled up and stuff.”

“But what about the insane guy over in Soak? What made him go mad?” asked Sally.

“He took a blow to the head when they where putting up support beams, caused brain damage. Doctors are trying to cure it with drugs and therapy, but it isn’t looking good. Look, I can see what has happened here. Someone dared you to come up to the house and stuff right? Look, just go back to town, but don’t tell anybody about the work. It’s supposed to be a secret, Ok.”

Sally and Gordon nodded and left the house by the front entrance, which the man in the cloak showed them to. It was only when they where out of sight of the house did the two of them run, right the way back to town.
----------------------

“They’re gone sir. I hope they didn’t disturb you much.”
A figure stepped out of the shadows, wearing the same type of cloak as his servant. “Don’t worry Steven, they where no problem at all.” Said the hood, in a voice that was quite clearly speaking English, but not coming out of a human mouth. “But I trust you gave nothing away, did you?”

“No sir, I told them the agreed cover-story. I mean, even if I did tell them the truth, who would believe me when I said that I worked for a six and a half foot tall dog that walks like a man?”

“Steve,” said the cloak man to Steve as he lowered his hood to reveal a fur covered muzzle, “how many times do I have to tell you that I m not a dog, but a wolf.”

“Sorry sir.” said Steve.

“Never mind now, we must secure the creature for transport. If these creatures are here,” the cloaked figure said, indicating the repulsive thing on the table, “then the infestation is worse than fleet command suspected. We may have to step up the immunization process to be completed in a few years.” The creature writhed in its harness, and emitted an ear-piercing screech.

“This is a real dogs dinner I’ve got myself into.” said Steve, as his master walked away leaving him to secure the creature.

“The word is wolf, Steve, not dog!” called back the wolf-like figure.

“Sorry sir.”…

OK, I wrote this story a few years ago, so don't rip into me that much, OK! It did help me pass my english re-take.

Enjoy!

And the asides from the Narrator in Hitch-hiker style came out well! =^^=

Although the end leaves me to ask, will there be more? Is this the first chapter, there are a few questions unanswered...

Very easy, clean read too! great work! :D
